Non-Antiperspirant Deodorant: The Importance of Sweating

Index:

Did you know that sweating is essential for your armpits? Even if it's a bit uncomfortable, sweating is a natural and essential process that keeps our body temperature balanced. That’s why it’s best to shop for a non-antiperspirant deodorant.

Interrupting the natural processes of the body is not the ideal way to cope with sweat or odors. But traditional deodorants end up doing just that: interrupting the sweating process and clogging the pores with aluminum.

Awful, isn’t it?

But rest assured that aluminum-free deodorant to manage sweating already exists.

Join us and understand a little more about your body’s natural sweating process and learn what non-antiperspirant deodorant options are available. Options that will not harm your body – or the planet.

What is sweating?

It may seem like a lie, but we sweat ALL THE TIME! That’s because sweat is the simplest way to always maintain an average body temperature of 98.6°F. If our bodies reach more than 113°F, our internal organs can be cooked.

Now do you see how important it is to sweat?

The human body has between 2-4 million sweat glands, which are most concentrated in our head, underarms, hands, feet, and groin. These glands are where perspiration is produced.

If it’s very hot out, your body may even remove water from tissues near the sweat glands in order to produce sweat. On a super-hot summer day, an adult can lose up to 2.5 liters of water through sweating – so no neglecting hydration, okay?

In general, our sweat is 99% water, with the remaining 1% made up of mineral salts, such as sodium and potassium. Most of our sweat evaporates the second it hits the skin (like we said, we sweat all the time, so not all sweat will be visible).

But if sweat is primarily water, why does it smell the way it does? Is it because of toxins? Let’s take a look.

Do we eliminate toxins in sweat?

Although there is a very strong widespread belief that it is possible to eliminate toxins through sweat, none of this is scientifically proven. The only role of perspiration is to regulate our body temperature – not to cleanse our bodies.

In fact, the only way our body releases toxins is through urination (with the help of our liver.)

So, if we don’t release toxins in our sweat, where does body odor come from?

Are perspiration, sweat, and odor the same thing?

Sweat and perspiration are the names for the same process: cooling the body by releasing water. However, odor isn’t simply the result of the water release.

The odor from sweat is caused by fungi and bacteria, as well as some food and drinks we consume. Okay, we know you must be confused by now: How do foods and drinks affect sweat odor?

The foods that can change the smell of perspiration are garlic and onion. This is because garlic and onions are both high in sulfuric acid, which mixes with your sweat and affects the odor.

Of course, you’re probably wondering: “How can I avoid bad odors while sweating?” For starters, it’s important for you to understand the difference between deodorant vs antiperspirants.

Deodorant Vs. Antiperspirants: what’s the difference?

Although we call everything deodorant, many products you see on the shelves are actually antiperspirants. That means that they do just what the name suggests: They control perspiration. And to do that, these products use mainly aluminum!

Is antiperspirant safe? Honestly, it depends on the product. There are some studies that suggest that aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's disease and breast cancer among other issues.

So, is antiperspirant safe? Probably not if it contains aluminum.

Even if you find an antiperspirant that contains a sweat-blocking alternative to aluminum, you are still blocking your body’s natural sweat process, so whether non-aluminum antiperspirant is safe is up for debate as well.

In general, switching to natural deodorant is your best bet. (And by deodorant, we mean a non-antiperspirant deodorant.)

A non-antiperspirant deodorant will control body odor without messing with your body’s natural sweating process. It does this through a combination of ingredients that reduce the proliferation of odor-causing bacteria.

In addition, these natural, non-antiperspirant deodorants also have less impact on the environment, as they do not contain any toxic or harmful ingredients.
